Ballymount Church

<<<<Back>

By John Duffy

Ballymount Chapel is a familiar landmark on the Dublin to Carlow Road, it was build in the years 1876-1778 by Archdeacon Brady. The patron is St. Joseph. The local landlord family, Carroll's, gave the ground for the chapel school and teacher's residence, for the sum of £40 which did not have to be paid at that time. When the old school was sold some years ago this money was paid. Colonel Mitchell resident in the Carroll's former home, declined the money and said to go ahead and sell the school building.

The Bagalls, local stonemasons, built the main structure. Farmer Doyle, who lived near Calverstown, donated the bell. ‘King and Queen' Doyle local farmers donated the stained glass windows at the back of the altar. In 1946 the old wooden altar was renovated and the present marble alter was fitted. The Bermingham family of Bulhill donated this altar. The chapel was freshly plastered on the outside in 1960. Some years later the interior was dry-lined and plastered. At this time some new seats were fitted, also new confessional boxes were donated at this time, with holy water fonts, windows and name plaques. Fr Mark Curtis the parish priest 1960-65 donated a statue of the Virgin Mary, the quarry to the back of the chapel was chosen as a grotto for the statue. Mass is celebrated at the grotto each year on 15 th August.
