Reverend Colm O`Siochru
Kilmead means Cill Mo Ide (Church of Saint Ita). It was build in 1798. the Church was built on land donated by Mrs Margaret Kenna, an aunt of Paul Cullen, who later on became the first Irish Cardinal. Even though many Churches were burnt after the Irish were defeated in Wexford mainly, Lord Fitzgerald and his family, landlords of South Kildare, allowed the people of Kilmead to worship in peace.
Ever since the people of Kilmead have looked after the church with great love and affection. The Church of St. Ita, Kilmead is the oldest church in the Parish of Narraghmore.
Education played a very important role in the life of Kilmead. In the townland of Skerries the first school was build in 1868 on a plot of ground donated by the Kavanaghs of Athy at the cost of £300, the collection of which was entirely due to the labours of Fr. Yorke C.C. (one stain glass window on the right hand side of the alter is dedicated to Fr. Yorke) in the church is who was at that time a curate in Kilmead. The first school house in Kilmead was a mudhouse thatched and it was valued at about £3. the present school building was built in 1949.
