According to local legend when St. Patrick was on his travels towards Glassealy, some of his enemies dug a pit in which to trap him. They placed a wild boar in the pit and covered it with twigs and brambles. The plan was that when St Patrick fell into the pit the boar would kill him.
But Patrick was warned of what was in store for him by an old woman. In turn he said he would turn the spot into a well and bless it. He said that the water from the well would cure all ailments of the eyes. Many people have travelled to the well on pilgrimages down through the years, including former president Eamon de Valera.
